The previous kitchen was a very small U shape which made it difficult to have more than one person in it at a time. The sink faced the wall and the client didn't like that enclosed feeling. There was a desk area which became a "catch-all" and was not useful space. The traffic flow was not efficient in that you had to walk around the peninsula to get into the work area. The cabinets were birch with white knobs, beige counter top and white walls. The kitchen was divided from the family room with a wall and a doorway.
The client wanted to open up the kitchen to the family room. She thought she wanted a pass-thru when we first met with her, because she didn't see any way of changing the layout. We assessed her problems with traffic flow and listened to her desires and came up with the proposal of changing the layout entirely. We designed a plan that would consist of two L-shaped work surfaces. We suggested that we remove a large part of the wall to the family room so it would be much more open, as she had wanted.
The client was very comfortable with color and wanted painted cabinets in an ivory color, with burgundy counter tops and walls. We assisted her in the selection and coordination of new plastic laminate counter tops with a Corian nosing in burgundy. The result looks like a solid Corian counter top - it's beautiful! We chose a burgundy paint color to match the counter top which makes the ivory cabinets look very rich. And we chose a ceramic tile for the floor with burgundy in it, that also had a slip resistant finish, appropriate for the kitchen.
The client wanted more efficiency in her cabinet storage. We designed a recycle center into her corner cabinet, spice rack on the inside of a door, tray dividers for storage of her serving trays above the fridge, tray dividers for her baking sheets inside a lower cabinet, and a fully loaded pantry with very efficient storage.
The client really wanted her sink to face the window so she could enjoy the daylight and scenery of her back yard while in the kitchen. But she didn't want to see everything in the kitchen from the nook. So we planned for a 42" high wall to be built behind the sink area, separating it from the nook and maintaining some privacy in the kitchen area. She also wanted good lighting, so we designed undercabinet lighting, illuminating all of her work surfaces.
